I have heard of the same story few years ago. Going to Atlanta or Charlotte, you get a cheaper air fare than from GSP. But, what people do not take into account is the cost of driving to get to one of those two airports and compare to GSP. In other words, driving half hour to get to GSP, cost of parking, and cost of air fare to compare the cost of driving to Charlotte, cost of parking and cost of air fare. I am sure the overall cost is lower if you go from GSP than Charlotte. The only advantage from Charlotte or Atlanta is you have more direct/non-stop flights than GSP.
